Tipping customs vary significantly around the world, so knowing the local norm makes a real difference. In the US, 18–20% gratuity is now the standard for sit-down restaurant service — 15% used to be the baseline but expectations have shifted upward. For exceptional service, 25% or more is always welcome. In the UK, tipping is more discretionary: 10–12.5% is typical at sit-down restaurants, and many bills already include a service charge — always check before adding extra. In Australia, tipping is not expected but is appreciated; 10% is considered generous at a nice restaurant. Calculating a tip manually is straightforward: multiply your restaurant bill by the tip percentage in decimal form (20% = 0.20). To split the bill equally among a group, add the tip to the total and divide by the number of diners. Our free tip calculator and bill splitter handles all of this instantly. It's particularly useful for large group dinners where mental arithmetic gets complicated. No sign-up, no ads in your way — just a fast, accurate answer so you can focus on enjoying your meal.
The standard restaurant tip in the US is 15–20% for good service, 10% for poor service, and 25% or more for exceptional service. Many people default to 18–20% as a baseline.
If everyone ordered different amounts, it's fairest to split based on individual totals. Our tip calculator splits the total bill (plus tip) equally — for unequal splits, you'd calculate each person's share as a percentage of the subtotal.
Technically you tip on the pre-tax amount, but in practice most people tip on the post-tax total shown on the bill. The difference is usually small and tipping on the post-tax total is widely accepted.
15% was the standard tip for many years in the US. However, expectations have shifted — most servers now consider 18–20% to be the baseline for good service. 15% is still perfectly acceptable for counter service, buffets, or average service at a casual restaurant.
Enter the full bill total, select your desired tip percentage, and then set the number of people splitting the bill. Our tip calculator divides the total (bill + tip) equally among the group and shows exactly what each person owes. For parties of 6 or more, many restaurants add an automatic 18–20% service charge.
